AUSTIN, Texas — If Clyde Cain had to guess, he’d say the Louisiana Cajun Navy rescued 8,000 to lớn 10,000 Houstonians during the flooding that followed Hurricane Harvey last year. But, he’s really not sure.

“I don’t ever focus on that number … because you don’t have really time lớn pay attention to lớn that,” said the founder & chief executive officer of the Louisiana Cajun Navy. “The only number that will always matter to me is how many people didn’t get saved. How can we make that number zero?”

Cain & his fellow sailors have been rescuing people from flooded areas since Hurricane Katrina hit Louisiana in 2005. When Harvey tore through south Texas last year, the Cajun Navy was ready lớn deploy, but not until their help was requested.

“We’re not here to supersede anybody,” Cain said. “My whole point from the beginning was to lớn work with other groups. … We came here to be assistance.”

In Houston, many of the local first responders were trapped by Harvey’s floodwaters. The Cajun Navy, which Cain refers lớn as “second responders,” came lớn the rescue, enabling first responders lớn get out & do their jobs helping others.

Then they mix out through the city, clearing areas zone-by-zone khổng lồ make sure nobody was left behind. Sometimes Cain’s crews và the people they rescued didn’t speak the same language, but trust was not an issue.

“They just get in the boat with you, & they know you’re there lớn save them,” Cain said. “It doesn’t matter if we speak their language. … They understand that we’re rescuing them and we care about them.”

Volunteering with the Cajun Navy is not an easy job. It is physically demanding, & Cain said he has had night terrors from the things he has seen.

“It’s real dangerous,” he said, “and there’s real people’s lives at risk.”

Cain knows not everybody can help people the way the Cajun Navy does, but there is room for everyone to lớn make a difference in someone’s life.

“We’re just out here trying to inspire others to vày what we do,” Cain said. “Everybody has a storm in their life. It doesn’t have lớn wait until a hurricane. … I believe we just need to get back to lớn the basics of helping each other.”

WASHINGTON – The Federal Emergency Management Agency announced today that the Proof of Loss deadline will not be further extended. Due lớn the large scale of Hurricane Harvey, tienkiemkyduyen.mobi immediately extended the deadline for policyholders khổng lồ submit a Proof of Loss from the standard 60 days to 365 days after the date of loss for this event. tienkiemkyduyen.mobi is committed khổng lồ ensuring that policyholders receive every dollar they are entitled lớn under their National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) policy.

“Policyholders should vị everything they can khổng lồ submit any remaining requests for payment as soon as possible,” said NFIP chief executive David Maurstad. “Policyholders should continue to lớn work with their insurers, and the NFIP will pay all proved và agreed-to claims, even after the deadline.”

Extending the deadline to lớn submit a Proof of Loss to 365 days following the date of flood loss provided policyholders with a clear và predictable timeline khổng lồ complete their claims, instead of a timeline based on a series of short extensions as in the past. Within the first six months of Harvey making landfall, policyholders across Texas filed more than 91,000 claims. The NFIP closed out over 97 percent of those claims & paid out, in the first six months, more than $8.5 billion, putting survivors on the road to recovery much quicker and more fully.

Even after the one year Proof of Loss deadline, policyholders will need to liên hệ their NFIP flood insurance carrier khổng lồ submit a Proof of Loss if the policyholder:

Discovers additional direct physical loss by or from flood during the course of repairs,Is not satisfied with their payment, or Has not filed a claim since providing notice of the loss khổng lồ the insurer.

The date of loss refers khổng lồ the date that the flood damaged the insured property. For Texas flood insurance policyholders affected by Hurricane Harvey, these dates of loss are between August 24, 2017 và September 13, 2017.

tienkiemkyduyen.mobi encourages all flood insurance policyholders with questions to lớn talk lớn their NFIP insurer. Your NFIP insurer can help make clear how the flood insurance policy applies lớn your claim and take immediate action. Policyholders can also liên hệ the NFIP điện thoại tư vấn center at 1-800-427-4661 with questions about requesting additional payments, or any general questions regarding the NFIP.

PHILADELPHIA – The Federal Emergency Management Agency (tienkiemkyduyen.mobi) Region III, in partnership with the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, will host a day-long roundtable event: “Living with Water: the Future of Flood Insurance” on August 27, 2018 in Williamsport, PA. The roundtable will bring together key stakeholders from all levels of government and the public và private sectors, including floodplain managers, realtors, insurance agents, lenders, & emergency managers, for a critical discussion on increasing flood insurance coverage & reducing flood risk in Pennsylvania.

The event, co-organized by tienkiemkyduyen.mobi, the Pennsylvania Emergency Management Agency (PEMA), the Pennsylvania Insurance Department, the Pennsylvania Department of Community and Economic Development (DCED) and Lycoming County, will provide an in-depth look on how flooding and insurance can impact communities.

“Flooding is the most common and costly hazard in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania,” stated Rick Flinn, Director of PEMA. “Insurance provides critical protection for property owners during a flood. This workshop is a unique opportunity to bring together key players for an xuất hiện dialogue about past flooding events, the risks of future flooding, và the importance of insurance.”

Roundtable activities will kick-off in the morning with presentations on flood risk & insurance from federal, state & local partners, và will be followed by a moderated panel discussion with the following public and private sector experts:

Kelda Weber, Vice-President, AMIG-CincinnatiCarolyn Kousky, Directory of Policy Research & Engagement, University of Pennsylvania, Wharton Risk Management and Decision Processes CenterMarita Kelley, Deputy Director / pa State National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) Coordinator, Pennsylvania Department of Community và Economic DevelopmentJessica Altman, pa Insurance CommissionerMarcella Soverns, Senior Vice President, Muncy Bank & TrustJeff Thomas, Executive Deputy Director, pa Emergency Management Agency (PEMA) Melanie J. Following the moderated panel, the workshop will feature breakout sessions on insurance affordability, communication challenges, perceptions of risk, và successful local-level floodplain management. The workshop will conclude with an xuất hiện house so that all participants have an opportunity to lớn gather information, ask questions, network, & follow up on topics of interest khổng lồ their stakeholders.

“Flood insurance provides the greatest possible protection against the risk of flooding,” stated MaryAnn Tierney, tienkiemkyduyen.mobi Region III Regional Administrator. “Recent flooding across the Commonwealth has demonstrated how damaging and disruptive flooding can be khổng lồ businesses, families, and communities. This roundtable sự kiện highlights the need for insurance & the importance of working with our state, local, federal, và private sector partners to reduce flood risk across Pennsylvania.”

The roundtable participants and event organizers hope lớn broaden the conversation on reducing the risk of future flooding, increasing the number of residents covered by flood insurance, and establishing productive partnerships with all insurance stakeholders in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. The NFIP specifically aims to reduce the impact of flooding on private & public structures by providing affordable insurance to lớn property owners, renters & businesses while encouraging communities to adopt và enforce floodplain management regulations. These efforts help mitigate the effects of flooding on new và improved structures.

The 2018 Flood Insurance Roundtables represent tienkiemkyduyen.mobi Region III’s close partnerships with all of our states to lớn reduce flood risk & ensure property owners and communities are more resilient to future flooding.

AUSTIN, Texas — When Ervin Lassiter’s neighborhood was ravaged by a tornado in April 2011, members of the nonprofit Samaritan’s Purse were among the first faces he saw.

“My home was hit on a Saturday evening. By first thing Sunday morning, Samaritan’s Purse was there,” the Colerain, North Carolina, resident said in July 2018. “They helped me recover my home … and then they built nine homes in my area from the ground up.

“Once all that was finished, our community said, ‘It’s time for us lớn start giving back.’”

Lassiter deployed with Samaritan’s Purse lớn Moore, Oklahoma, where he spent a week helping tornado survivors recover. He traveled to Oklahoma at his own expense to try to lớn help other people, but he found that he was the one being uplifted.

“I’ve been hooked ever since,” Lassiter said in Rockport, Texas, where he was helping rebuild a Hurricane Harvey survivor’s home. “This is my 20th , and I love it. I think it’s God’s calling.”

Five Samaritan’s Purse construction teams based in the Rockport area are working to lớn repair or rebuild homes damaged by Harvey.

Since Hurricane Harvey, tienkiemkyduyen.mobi’s voluntary agency liaisons have helped Texas communities manage more than 91,000 volunteers from organizations like Samaritan’s Purse and track more than 3.4 million volunteer-hours.

Within three years after Harvey’s destruction, Samaritan’s Purse plans lớn have helped 250 families get back trang chủ in Aransas, Nueces, Refugio và San Patricio counties. When combined with Samaritan’s Purse teams in the Houston area, the goal is lớn return 1,000 families home.

Each Samaritan’s Purse construction team is managed by a full-time construction supervisor, but the workers are new each week.

“The volunteers, every week, we get a new group. Và we have to instruct them, show them how lớn use tools, show them what we’re doing,” said Construction Supervisor Tim Cottrell. “And their heart, you can’t beat the heart of a volunteer. There’s no way about it — their enthusiasm.”

Volunteers come from all over the country to lớn work together và live together in housing provided by the First Baptist Church of Portland, Texas, which can support up lớn 30 volunteers.

So far, Samaritan’s Purse has approved 12 new trang chủ construction projects and 26 repair jobs for their volunteers khổng lồ complete in the Rockport area. The nonprofit also will provide building materials to lớn eight families and manufactured homes khổng lồ 26.

Samaritan’s Purse volunteers wear recognizable bright orange t-shirts when they work on homes, which remind passersby that people from other states still care about Harvey survivors and want to lớn pitch in to help.

“There’s not a day that passes that somebody — a local person, a resident or somebody just passing by — doesn’t stop and say to our volunteers, ‘Thank you for being here in our community,’” said Karen Hayes, office manager for Samaritan’s Purse’s Rockport-area operation. “Everybody has had just a true spirit of thankfulness & gratefulness.”

Lassiter said he is just as grateful for the opportunity lớn serve as the community is lớn receive him.

“I always thank the homeowners for allowing us khổng lồ come. … I say, ‘If you didn’t allow them to lớn come, the people that come from all over the country would not get their blessing,” he said. “When I tell come on their own time, their own expenses … lớn work on their home, most of the time it blows their mind.”

PHILADELPHIA – Residents of the Borough of Etna, Pennsylvania are being rewarded by the Borough’s implementation of various floodplain management measures encouraged by the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP). These measures have reduced the risk of flooding & resulted in an overall decrease in insurance premiums for properties insured within the Borough.

The Federal Emergency Management Agency (tienkiemkyduyen.mobi) oversees the NFIP, which administers a program called the Community Rating System (CRS). The CRS is a voluntary incentive program that recognizes và encourages community floodplain management activities that exceed minimum NFIP requirements. “The Community Rating System activities undertaken by Etna Borough shows their commitment to protecting themselves from the dangers of flooding,” tienkiemkyduyen.mobi Region III Regional Administrator MaryAnn Tierney stated. “We would lượt thích to thank Etna Borough for taking actions khổng lồ protect lives & property.”

*

The CRS program includes 10 different class rating levels based on the number and type of activities voluntarily initiated by the community. Each class rating màn chơi corresponds to a percentage discount on National Flood Insurance policy premiums for policies written in the municipality.

Under the CRS, local officials are asked to meet three goals: (1) reduce flood losses; (2) facilitate accurate insurance rating; & (3) promote the awareness of flood insurance.

As a participant in the Community Rating System, Etna Borough is part of an elite group of 27 communities in Pennsylvania that have achieved this recognition. With the steps taken by Etna Borough lớn protect its citizens & increase its resiliency, it has advanced in the CRS program to a Class 7 rating, enabling residents with properties located in a high risk flood zone to receive a 15% reduction on their annual flood insurance premiums. Overall, participation as a Class 7 community results in a total savings of over $40,170 annually for policyholders in Etna Borough.

On behalf of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, tienkiemkyduyen.mobi Region III, & the NFIP, we would lượt thích to thank Etna for their hard work & dedication khổng lồ reducing flood risk và increasing resiliency within their community.

Learn about your risk of flooding và ask questions about what the new maps will mean for your property. You can meet one-on-one with specialists lớn discuss flood risk, flood insurance, appeals, mitigation, & engineering. Home and business owners, renters, real estate agents, mortgage lenders, surveyors & insurance agents are encouraged to attend.

The mở cửa house date, time và location is:

The new preliminary FIRMs were developed through a partnership between the communities và the Federal Emergency Management Agency. They are based on updated modeling data and show coastal flood hazards more accurately than older maps.

tienkiemkyduyen.mobi’s Mission: Helping people before, during, & after disasters.

ORLANDO, Fla. – In the 12 months since Hurricane Irma smashed into Florida, almost $3 billion in federal assistance from tienkiemkyduyen.mobi, the Small Business Administration and the National Flood Insurance Program is helping lớn restore homes, businesses và public facilities. In addition to federal funds, the state of Florida, local governments, charitable organizations, community groups & thousands of Floridians are rolling up their sleeves & opening their checkbooks lớn help survivors recover from Hurricane Irma.

“Forty-seven thousand people have volunteered more than 1.5 million hours on Irma-related projects,” said Allan L. Jarvis, tienkiemkyduyen.mobi federal coordinating officer. “People are powering the recovery. Volunteers have been here since the beginning and one year later, they’re still assisting survivors through the long-term recovery groups.”

Volunteer Florida, the state’s lead agency for volunteers và donations, coordinates many of the volunteer activities. In the days after Irma’s landfall, Volunteer Florida:

Teamed up with Crisis CleanUp to generate work orders to restore 25,000 homes damaged by the hurricane. More than 500 AmeriCorps members cut fallen trees, put tarps on roofs, & removed storm-damaged drywall, insulation, flooring, furniture & appliances.Partnered with Centro Campesino to provide food, water và emergency supplies khổng lồ 13,500 people in Southwest Florida.Worked with Star of the Sea to provide furniture lớn families in the Keys who lost belongings during Irma.Provided $2.6 million lớn 77 organizations who helped survivors during the response lớn Hurricane Irma. Recipients include foodbanks across the state and nonprofits including Team Rubicon, the United Way of Brevard County, the Salvation Army, Catholic Charities và NECHAMA.

As response has given way lớn recovery, tienkiemkyduyen.mobi—recognizing that some survivors continue to need help—awarded Volunteer Florida more than $28 million lớn administer the Disaster Case Management Program. Four agencies are providing disaster case managers to an estimated 10,000 households that may need further assistance lớn realize their disaster recovery plans.

Volunteer Florida is using some of the money from tienkiemkyduyen.mobi’s Disaster Case Management Program khổng lồ fund recovery agencies assisting survivors. Approximately $5.5 million has been given out in grants and an additional $1.6 million is earmarked khổng lồ pay salaries, travel and expenses for disaster recovery professionals.

Funds from the Disaster Case Management Program also went to tư vấn Long Term Recovery Groups.

Long-Term Recovery Groups are nonprofit, community-based organizations made up of volunteers, civic groups & residents of the affected area. The groups reflect the diversity of the community và focus on locally-driven solutions that will serve people living in the community. By working together, LTRGs are able khổng lồ leverage resources from a variety of sources lượt thích philanthropies, charitable organizations and faith-based groups who supply donated goods, volunteer labor and funding.

As the groups began to khung after Hurricane Irma, tienkiemkyduyen.mobi Voluntary Agency Liaisons crisscrossed the state meeting with local groups & offered technical assistance khổng lồ the LTRGs. The Voluntary Agency Liaisons are experienced emergency management professionals who can share best practices from past disasters, guide LTRGs as they develop bylaws & committees và identify services that may be available to aid survivors.

Volunteer Florida provided grants of $50,000 each to lớn 13 LTRGs lớn cover staff costs. The American Red Cross is matching this grant with an additional $50,000. LTRGs will use this money to hire experienced personnel who can design & implement recovery strategies, secure additional resources, và facilitate decision-making to lớn increase long-term resilience.

One year ago, Hurricane Irma brought destruction and suffering to thousands of Floridians but the people of Florida—with help from volunteer groups, philanthropic organizations and local, state and federal governments—are working hard lớn build communities that can withstand even the strongest storm.
